Professor Ayumi Shintani is an esteemed academic in the field of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics, currently serving as an Endowed Professor and Chair at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine. She has a strong focus on observational studies, health services research, and statistical education.With over 190 peer-reviewed publications to her name, Professor Shintani has made significant contributions to medical research. During her tenure at Vanderbilt University, she was recognized as an award-winning lecturer, teaching the Master of Science in Clinical Research course for a decade to aspiring physician scientists. Additionally, she played a vital role in securing more than 60 NIH grant awards while at Vanderbilt.
Dr. Masayuki Miyasaka, M.D., Ph.D., serves as a Guest Professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center at Osaka University and is also a FiDiPro Professor at the Academy of Finland. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying lymphocyte trafficking into various tissues and tumor metastasis in vivo. Key areas of his work include the physiological recruitment of lymphocytes and dendritic cells to secondary lymphoid tissues and the functions and regulation of intercellular adhesion molecules and chemokines. Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, M.D., Ph.D., is a Specially Appointed Professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center at Osaka University. He is renowned for his discovery of regulatory T (Treg) cells, which constitute about five percent of T cells and play a crucial role in immune suppression. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of naturally occurring Treg cells and human Treg cells, particularly in the context of anti-tumor immune responses against adult T-cell leukemia. This work is expected to shed new light on cancer immunotherapy.Dr. Sakaguchi was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2012 and has been recognized as one of the “Highly Cited Researchers” by Thomson Reuters. In 2015, he received the prestigious Canada Gairdner International Award. His contributions to immunology have significantly advanced our understanding of immune regulation and its implications for treating immune-related diseases, including cancer.
Eiichiro Fukusaki is a Professor at the Department of Biotechnology, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. He began his career in 1985 after receiving his master's degree from Osaka University, joining Nitto Denko Co., where he worked for a decade before returning to academia. He earned his Ph.D. from Osaka University in 1993 while employed at the company.As the head of the Metabolomics Lab, Professor Fukusaki has published over 200 technical articles, book chapters, and reviews and holds 17 Japanese and eight international patents. His research focuses on metabolomics, particularly in relation to food loss and its applications in pharmaceuticals and medicine. He actively collaborates with around 30 academic institutions and industrial partners to advance analytical techniques in metabolomics. In recognition of his contributions to biotechnology, he received the "Saito Award" from the Society of Biotechnology of Japan in 2004.
Shuichi Shimma is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biotechnology, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. He obtained his B.S. degree in 2001 and M.S. degree in 2003 from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, followed by a Ph.D. in 2007. Prior to his appointment at Osaka University, he worked at the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Tokyo, where he began applying imaging mass spectrometry to clinical pharmacology. His research interests focus on leveraging advanced imaging techniques to enhance understanding and treatment in clinical settings.
Dr. Sastia Prama Putri is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biotechnology, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. She received her B.Sc. degree in 2004 from Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia and completed her M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees at Osaka University in 2008 and 2010, respectively. In recognition of her outstanding research on coffee metabolomics, she was awarded the L’Oreal Award for Women in Science in 2015.Before her current role, Dr. Putri conducted research as a postdoctoral fellow and has since been instrumental in establishing research partnerships with local and international companies. Her work focuses on the large-scale analysis of metabolites in plants and food products, employing various techniques in spectroscopy, spectrometry, purification, and statistical analyses. Dr. Putri's contributions to the field have garnered significant attention, including her involvement in groundbreaking research on Kopi Luwak, the world’s most expensive coffee.
Hiroshi Uyama is a Professor at the Division of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, where he has been since 2004. He received his Ph.D. in applied chemistry from Tohoku University in 1991. His research interests focus on bioplastics, biomaterials, and porous materials, contributing significantly to the development and application of sustainable materials in various fields.Uyama's work encompasses the design and fabrication of bioplastics, exploring their potential in reducing environmental impact while maintaining functionality. Akinori Saeki received his Ph.D. in applied chemistry from Osaka University in 2007 and is currently a professor at the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University, a position he has held since 2019. His research interests focus on the nanometer-scale dynamics of chemical intermediates in organic and organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Through his work, Professor Saeki aims to deepen the understanding of these materials' behaviors and properties, contributing to advancements in various applications within the field of applied chemistry
Dr. Michiya Matsusaki received his Ph.D. degree in 2003 from Kagoshima University and began his academic career as a postdoctoral fellow at Osaka University in the same year. He joined the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University as an Assistant Professor in 2006, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015, and became a full professor in 2019. In addition to his academic roles, he has served as a JST-PRESTO researcher concurrently from 2008 to 2011 and again from 2015 to the present.Dr. Matsusaki has received 18 awards throughout his career and has published over 150 papers, accumulating a total of 4,457 citations with an h-index of 38. His research interests include the dynamics of chemical intermediates at the nanometer scale, particularly within organic and organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Through his work, he aims to advance the understanding of these materials' properties and their applications in various fields.
Yoshitada Morikawa is a professor at the Department of Precision Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. Minoru Asada is a Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, and the Director of the Division of Cognitive Neuroscience Robotics at the Osaka University Institute for Academic Initiatives. His specialties include robotics, artificial intelligence, and cognitive developmental robotics. He completed his PhD in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University. He has held positions at the University of Maryland and Osaka University, and has held his current position since 1997.
Hiroshi Ishiguro is a Distinguished Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, where he focuses on sensor networks, interactive robotics, and android science. He completed his Ph.D. in systems engineering at Osaka University in 1991. Before his current role, he held positions at Kyoto University, the University of California, San Diego, and Wakayama University.Ishiguro is renowned for his work in developing humanoid robots, particularly the Geminoid, which closely resembles him and is designed for teleoperation. Koh Hosoda is a Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, where he has contributed significantly to the field of robotics. He obtained his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Kyoto University in 1993. Following his doctoral studies, he served as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering for Computer-Controlled Machinery at Osaka University from 1993 to 1997. He then advanced to the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Adaptive Machine Systems, Osaka University, from 1997 until 2010. Subsequently, he became a Professor at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology at Osaka University, holding that position until 2014.
Shigeyuki Masaoka is a professor at Osaka University, where he specializes in the development of molecular modules for artificial photosynthesis. He earned his Ph.D. from Kyoto University in 2004 under the supervision of Prof. Susumu Kitagawa. Following his doctoral studies, he joined Prof. Matthew J. Rosseinsky's laboratory at the University of Liverpool as a postdoctoral research fellow. In 2005, he became an assistant professor in Prof. Ken Sakai's laboratory at Kyushu University and later started his independent career at the Institute for Molecular Science as an associate professor in 2011. In 2019, she was promoted to Associate Professor at Osaka University.Dr. Kondo's current research focuses on developing function-integrated molecule-based catalytic systems for small molecule conversions, aiming to create efficient and innovative solutions for various chemical processes. Mitsuharu Suzuki is an Associate Professor at the Division of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University.
