Specially Appointed Professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University
Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi, M.D., Ph.D., is a Specially Appointed Professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center at Osaka University. He is renowned for his discovery of regulatory T (Treg) cells, which constitute about five percent of T cells and play a crucial role in immune suppression. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of naturally occurring Treg cells and human Treg cells, particularly in the context of anti-tumor immune responses against adult T-cell leukemia. This work is expected to shed new light on cancer immunotherapy.Dr. Sakaguchi was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2012 and has been recognized as one of the “Highly Cited Researchers” by Thomson Reuters. In 2015, he received the prestigious Canada Gairdner International Award. His contributions to immunology have significantly advanced our understanding of immune regulation and its implications for treating immune-related diseases, including cancer.
