A Distinguished Scholar in Development Studies and Indigenous Affairs

Mark Moran serves as a Senior Industry Fellow at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at The University of Queensland, combining unique expertise in both technical and social sciences through his civil engineering degree and PhD in human geography and planning. His research spans borderland studies, aid effectiveness, appropriate technology, political economy of governance, and community-driven development. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively across diverse contexts including Papua New Guinea, China, Timor Leste, Bolivia, Lesotho, and remote Indigenous communities in Australia. His scholarly contributions include two significant books: "Serious Whitefella Stuff: When Solutions Became the Problem in Indigenous Affairs" and "Too Close to Ignore: Australia's Borderland with PNG and Indonesia." Moran's impact on education is notable through his development of online learning platforms, including Australia's first MicroMasters of Leadership in Global Development. His excellence in education was recognized in 2019 when he received a MOOC Award of Excellence from the UN SDG Academy for his course "Critical Development Perspectives." Beyond academia, he has demonstrated practical expertise in governance, public finance management, community planning, social housing, and water and sanitation projects across various sectors including non-profits, government, and consultancy.

A Leading Expert in Public Policy and International Development

Jodie Curth-Bibb serves as Director of Governance and Social Development at Square Circle and holds a PhD in Political Science from Flinders University, where she previously headed the Public Administration and Policy Masters Program. Her 20-year career spans academia, public service, international development, and media, with extensive experience in institutional reform and capacity development across the Pacific region. Her research focuses on governance, public sector reform, and gender equity, particularly in Pacific Island Countries where she has worked with numerous organizations including the Australian Federal Police, UNDP, World Bank, and various Pacific governments. She has made significant contributions to understanding complex governance challenges, notably through her work on policing gender violence in Pacific Island Countries and public sector capacity development. Her expertise encompasses institutional reform, gender mainstreaming, evidence-based policy-making, Indigenous governance, and complexity theory. Beyond academia, Curth-Bibb has established herself as a leading voice in development effectiveness and innovative approaches to program management, working with organizations across Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Fiji, and Pakistan. Her work bridges theory and practice, particularly in areas of public sector reform, gender equity, and social inclusion in fragile and post-conflict states.
