The University of QueenslandMark Moran serves as a Senior Industry Fellow at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at The University of Queensland, combining unique expertise in both technical and social sciences through his civil engineering degree and PhD in human geography and planning. His research spans borderland studies, aid effectiveness, appropriate technology, political economy of governance, and community-driven development. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively across diverse contexts including Papua New Guinea, China, Timor Leste, Bolivia, Lesotho, and remote Indigenous communities in Australia. His scholarly contributions include two significant books: "Serious Whitefella Stuff: When Solutions Became the Problem in Indigenous Affairs" and "Too Close to Ignore: Australia's Borderland with PNG and Indonesia." Moran's impact on education is notable through his development of online learning platforms, including Australia's first MicroMasters of Leadership in Global Development. His excellence in education was recognized in 2019 when he received a MOOC Award of Excellence from the UN SDG Academy for his course "Critical Development Perspectives." Beyond academia, he has demonstrated practical expertise in governance, public finance management, community planning, social housing, and water and sanitation projects across various sectors including non-profits, government, and consultancy.
