Fundamentos para la conservación ambiental

This course is part of Fundamentos para los estudios socioambientales.

This introductory course provides an interdisciplinary perspective on environmental conservation as a critical foundation for research and intervention. Designed for civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, students, and interested citizens, the curriculum covers essential concepts in biodiversity, methodological advances in ecosystem service assessment, and contemporary debates on nature's contributions and factors driving biodiversity loss. Students will explore deforestation drivers, climate change impacts on biodiversity, and develop the ability to appreciate the multidimensional effects of deforestation on humans, ecosystems, and Earth systems. The course examines environmental conservation through multiple worldviews arising from diverse valuations of nature and introduces the main conservation strategies, their definitions, typologies, and the histories and attributes of area-based conservation approaches. Participants will also learn how to define a conservation strategy monitoring program and understand the advantages of community monitoring.

Expert in Plant Ecology and Environmental Conservation

Adriana Sánchez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Universidad del Rosario and a researcher in the Functional and Ecosystem Ecology group. Her primary research interests include the ecophysiology of alpine plant species, the impact of climate change on plants and ecosystems, biodiversity in páramo and high-altitude ecosystems, and plant-animal interactions. She has extensive experience in plant ecophysiology, particularly in relation to environmental stressors. Recently, her work has expanded into socioecology and conservation, focusing on integrating social well-being within environmental frameworks. Adriana is also part of the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) and has served on the Advisory Council for Risk Management and Climate Change in Bogotá.

Expert in Climate-Ecosystem Interactions and Climate Change

Benjamín Quesada is a Senior Professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Universidad del Rosario. He holds a postdoctoral degree in vegetation-atmosphere interactions, as well as a Ph.D. and Master's in Climatology. His research focuses on climate-ecosystem interactions, climate extremes, the impacts of deforestation on climate, ecosystem functions, and the terrestrial carbon cycle. Benjamín is also a co-author of the recent IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL, 2019) and the Global Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES, 2019), particularly contributing to chapters on land-atmosphere interactions and the future of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
