Learn theological approaches to church administration by integrating vision, core values, and strategic stewardship for effective leadership.
This course offers a comprehensive theological approach to strategic management for Christian churches. Students will learn how to reappropriate strategic management principles as "strategic stewardship" - discerning God's direction for the church and pursuing God-centered ways of realizing it. The curriculum begins with exploring church vision as the foundational component of strategic stewardship, examining both its management function and theological importance. Students then investigate core values and culture, understanding how they represent a church's identity and operational approach. The course continues with an exploration of goals and objectives as the specific means for realizing church vision, framing them as God's plan for fulfilling the church's calling. Finally, students learn about church metrics for monitoring progress toward achieving the vision and gauging church health. Throughout the course, students will gain practical insights from exemplar stories shared by Duke Divinity School alumni who have successfully implemented these strategic elements in their church settings.
