The University of QueenslandRobin Evans is a distinguished mining industry professional with over 35 years of experience spanning both industry and academia. Currently semi-retired, he previously served as Program Leader for Transformational Learning at the University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute (2015-2021) and Deputy Director of Education at the International Mining for Development Centre (2011-2015). His career began with a BSc in Mining Engineering from Imperial College London, followed by advanced degrees from the University of Queensland including an MEngSc and MTechMgt. Evans started his career as a Mining Engineer with Billiton International Metals and held various technical and management positions in the mining industry, including roles at Mount Isa Mines and Initiating Explosives Systems Ltd. At the University of Queensland's Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, he pioneered the development of risk management frameworks for sustainable development in the minerals industry, particularly through the Sustainability Opportunity and Threat Analysis (SOTA) project. His research has focused on integrating sustainability principles into mining operations, social impact assessment of mine closure, and developing project-related sustainability indicators. Evans has also made significant contributions to mining education through his leadership of the Minerals and Energy for Development Alliance and coordination of training programs in resource governance for developing countries.
