Introducing Corrosion Science and Engineering

Week 1 shows the scientific and engineering concepts important to understanding corrosion in practice. Covers what corrosion is, its costs, eight types of corrosion, engineering design for corrosion control, materials properties, zinc corrosion, economic and social consequences, electrochemical corrosion science, and real-world corrosion failures from the Corrosion@Manchester museum.

This module discusses how cathodic protection works and its practical applications for protecting metallic structures. Covers basic principles, design of cathodic protection systems, protection criteria, current requirements assessment, and cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures. Content is divided into 6 sessions with comprehensive coverage of theoretical and practical aspects.

Week 3 introduces Surface Engineering, organized into five sections. Covers the importance of surfaces, how coatings protect from corrosion, coating design criteria, various Surface Engineering techniques, industrial applications of coatings for corrosion protection, coating performance and failure mechanisms.

Week 4 provides comprehensive coverage of oilfield corrosion science and engineering. Topics include types of oilfield equipment, sweet/sour corrosion, seawater corrosion, scaling, erosion, corrosion prediction, corrosion inhibition, and corrosion management. Covers practical aspects of oil and gas production facilities and their protection from corrosion.
