This course explores film editing as a storytelling art form, emphasizing the parallels between editing and screenwriting. Students begin by understanding editing as the third birth of a film (after scriptwriting and shooting), learning how these three stages interweave and influence each other. The curriculum progresses through the complete editing workflow, starting with script analysis and raw footage review, moving through rough cuts and fine cuts, and finishing with sound mixing and test screenings. Students learn practical shot selection techniques based on shot types, angles, focal lengths, and camera movements. Advanced concepts include editing psychology (cutting on action, cutting on eye blinks), continuity requirements, parallel editing, and various transition techniques. The course emphasizes editing philosophy—being invisible yet impactful, developing technical intuition, maintaining narrative logic, and learning when to preserve or break conventional rules. The course concludes with hands-on editing projects that allow students to apply all these concepts to create their own edited sequences.
