This module focuses on the Escazú Agreement, a significant regional environmental treaty in Latin America and the Caribbean. Students will learn about the particular features of this agreement, explore its details and structure, and analyze the progress in its implementation. The module provides insights into how international actors and agreements contribute to environmental governance frameworks by establishing standards for access to information, public participation, and environmental justice.

This module examines the role of participation in environmental governance. Students will learn definitions and mechanisms of participation, explore non-state participation in environmental decision-making, and analyze the challenges and considerations in state participation. The module emphasizes how citizens and civil society can engage in environmental defense through collective action, highlighting the importance of inclusive participatory processes for effective environmental governance.

This module focuses on community arrangements in environmental governance. Students will explore community action in managing environmental resources, particularly common-pool resources. The module examines how social norms and community-based regulations function as relevant elements in environmental management, highlighting the role of local communities as key actors in sustainable resource governance outside of state-based frameworks.

This module examines the relationship between environmental governance, local government, and public health. Students will learn how to construct and interpret environmental health indicators, understand their application in monitoring environmental conditions, and develop skills in selecting appropriate indicators for different contexts. The module highlights the critical connection between environmental quality and public health outcomes, emphasizing how local governance can address these interconnected challenges.

This module explores market mechanisms and the role of private actors in environmental governance. Students will learn about various market-based tools and approaches for addressing environmental challenges, understand how these mechanisms can be implemented and utilized, and analyze the role of businesses and other private entities in environmental management. The module presents market approaches as complementary to regulatory and community-based environmental governance strategies.
