This course is part of Fundamentos para los estudios socioambientales.
This introductory course integrates perspectives from various disciplines including anthropology, art, biology, political science, and philosophy to address political problems and social inequalities related to the ecological crisis. The curriculum is structured in five content sections. The first analyzes basic concepts of political ecology and the inequalities that motivate its study. The second section examines the concept of development and the socio-environmental conflicts derived from it. The third explores conflicts that may arise from different valuations and practices surrounding environmental conservation strategies. The fourth explains key discussions and proposals from ecofeminism regarding the particular impacts and burdens women have suffered in the ecological crisis. The final section addresses alternatives to development and how to imagine other possible worlds through collage art. The course aims to provide conceptual tools to discuss how socio-environmental interventions can be designed and analyzed beyond environmental sustainability, including actions that seek to resolve social inequalities, conflicts, mobilizations, and community struggles that underlie the ecological crisis.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to political ecology as an approach to understanding environmental conflicts within their social, political, and economic contexts. Students will explore how political ecology examines the intersection of power relations, social inequality, and environmental change. The curriculum addresses five key areas: fundamental concepts in political ecology including ecological footprints and planetary boundaries; socio-environmental conflicts surrounding development projects and infrastructure; conflicts arising from different approaches to conservation and protected areas; ecofeminist perspectives on environmental issues and the disproportionate impacts experienced by women; and alternatives to dominant development models, including critical examinations of capitalism's relationship with nature. Throughout the course, students will gain conceptual tools to analyze how social inequalities shape environmental conflicts and learn to design interventions that address both ecological sustainability and social justice. The course emphasizes how community struggles and mobilizations respond to environmental challenges and offers creative approaches to imagining alternative futures.
