Leading Expert in Environmental Technology and Sustainable Urban Development

Arjan van Timmeren serves as a Full Professor of Environmental Technology & Design at TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, while also acting as Principal Investigator at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). After earning his PhD with distinction from TU Delft in 2006 for his research on optimizing water, energy, and nutrient flows in the built environment, he has established himself as a leading authority in sustainable urban development. His research portfolio encompasses environmental technology, urban metabolism, circular economy, and sustainable area development. As Scientific Director of the Resilient Delta Initiative and Academic Portfolio Director for TU Delft's Sustainable Cities program, he leads numerous international projects focusing on intelligent cities, green-blue infrastructure, and climate adaptation. His work emphasizes the integration of sustainable technologies in urban environments, particularly in areas such as energy-neutral construction, electrical mobility, and resource flow management. Beyond his academic work, he maintains creative pursuits including painting, running, Pilates, and avant-gardening, while enjoying Mediterranean cuisine and wines in his spare time.

Pioneer in Biobased Building Materials and Sustainable Construction

Pablo van der Lugt serves as a Research Fellow for biobased building at both AMS Institute and TU Delft's Department of Urbanism, while also working as a senior consultant in the mass timber and engineered bamboo industry. After graduating with honors from TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture in 2003, he completed his PhD focusing on the environmental impact and commercialization potential of industrial bamboo materials compared to engineered wood. His expertise spans biobased building materials, circular economy, and sustainable construction, with particular emphasis on mass timber and engineered bamboo applications. He has authored several influential books including "Tomorrow's Timber" and "Booming Bamboo," which explore the potential of biobased building materials. His work has gained international recognition, leading to speaking engagements at major events including the International Climate Conferences (COP 21, 24, and 26). As an ambassador for biobased building at AMS Institute and TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture, he focuses on promoting the transition toward a circular, bio-based, and low-carbon built environment through innovative material solutions.
