Distinguished Economist and Public Policy Expert
Professor Y.C. Richard Wong, SBS, JP, serves as Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at The University of Hong Kong, where he has made significant contributions to economics and public policy since 1992. After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1981, he established himself as a leading authority on Hong Kong's economic development, founding the Hong Kong Centre for Economic Research (1987) and the Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy (1999). His academic leadership includes serving as Director of the School of Business (1997-2000), Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics (2001-2007), and Chairman of the Council of the Becker-Friedman Institute, University of Chicago (2015-2019). His research focuses on critical areas including public housing, inequality, intergenerational mobility, and regional economic development in China, particularly in the Pearl River Delta and Yangzi River Delta regions. His public service spans numerous prestigious committees, including the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee and Housing Authority, earning him the Silver Bauhinia Star in 1999 and appointment as Justice of the Peace in 2000. Through his weekly columns in the Hong Kong Economic Journal and South China Morning Post, he continues to influence public policy discourse while maintaining an active research agenda on Hong Kong's political economy, especially regarding housing policy reform and economic integration with mainland China
