Dr. Volkert A.L. Huurman is a Transplant Surgeon at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), specializing in pancreas and kidney transplantation. He graduated in Medicine from Leiden University in 2004 and subsequently conducted research at the Transplantation Research Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Harvard Medical School) and the Department of Surgery at LUMC, culminating in his PhD thesis on the influence of immune factors on the survival of pancreas and islet grafts in 2009. Dr. Huurman completed his surgical training in Leiden and The Hague from 2007 to 2013, followed by a fellowship in Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at LUMC. He is actively involved in clinical patient care, scientific research focused on transplantation outcomes, and the education of transplantation specialist nurses, medical students, and surgical trainees. Dr. Huurman teaches the course Clinical Kidney, Pancreas and Islet Transplantation, where he shares his expertise in transplant surgery and patient management.
