Professor Umakishore Ramachandran, an IEEE Fellow, has been a transformative force at Georgia Tech since receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1986. His distinguished career spans parallel and distributed systems, computer architecture, and operating systems, with over 100 technical publications to his credit. He spearheaded the revolutionary Online Master's in Computer Science program, making quality computer science education accessible worldwide. His research contributions include groundbreaking work on Distributed Shared Memory in the Clouds operating system and stream-based distributed programming through the Stampede system. Currently leading research in large-scale situation awareness using distributed camera networks, his work impacts surveillance, connected vehicles, and transportation. His excellence has been recognized through numerous awards, including the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (1990), multiple College of Computing honors, and IEEE Fellowship (2014). Throughout his career, he has successfully mentored 28 Ph.D. students who now hold prominent positions in academia and industry. His leadership roles include serving as Chair of the Core Computing Division and Director of the STAR Center, demonstrating his commitment to advancing computer science education and research.
