Pioneering Expert in Façade Technology and Circular Architecture

Delft University of TechnologyTillmann Klein served as Professor of Building Product Innovation at TU Delft and was a leading authority in façade technology and sustainable building design. After studying architecture at RWTH Aachen (1994) and completing his Meisterschüler at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (2000), he co-founded Rheinflügel Baukunst in 1999, focusing on art-related projects. His exceptional artistic contributions earned him the Nordrhein-Westphalen young artists' prize in 2005. At TU Delft, he led the Façade Research Group from 2005 and later established himself as director of Imagine Envelope b.v. (2008-2016). After completing his PhD in 2013, he served as a guest professor at TU Munich (2015-2018) before becoming full professor at TU Delft in 2018. He organized the influential "The Future Envelope" conference series and served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Façade Design and Engineering. As leader of the Circular Built Environment Hub, he made significant contributions to sustainability in architecture through his research and teaching. His legacy includes pioneering work in circular economy principles for the built environment and numerous innovative approaches to façade design. Professor Klein passed away on June 17, 2023, leaving behind a profound impact on architectural education and sustainable building practices.
