Leading French Musicologist Bridges Ancient and Baroque Musical Traditions
Dr. Théodora Psychoyou serves as Professor of Musicology at Sorbonne Université and Director of both the Institut de recherche en musicologie (IReMus) and the Collegium Musicæ of Sorbonne Université. Originally from Athens, she combines extensive musical training with scholarly expertise, holding degrees in acoustics, music history, counterpoint, and fugue from prestigious conservatories in Paris and Athens. Her research spans 17th and 18th-century French musical thought, particularly focusing on Marc-Antoine Charpentier's sacred music, the relationship between music and science, and the reception of Greek antiquity in early modern musical theory. As Vice President of the International Musicological Society and former fellow at Villa Medici, she has published numerous critical editions and scholarly works on baroque music, while also establishing innovative academic programs like the Master's in Baroque Music Performance at Sorbonne Université. Her current projects examine the intersection of ancient and modern musical traditions, including Latin music practices in the Greek archipelago and the quarrel between Ancients and Moderns in music.
