The University of EdinburghTariq Aziz serves as Associate Professor of Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, where he has established himself as a prominent researcher in soil fertility and nitrogen management. After completing his PhD in Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition from UAF in 2006, he has held visiting positions at the University of Giessen, Germany and the University of Western Australia. As Regional Director for South Asia of the International Nitrogen Initiative and lead partner in the South Asia Nitrogen Hub, he has made significant contributions to understanding nitrogen management and pollution in agricultural systems. His research focuses on improving nutrient use efficiency, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, exploring genetic diversity in crops, and utilizing biowaste materials as fertilizers. His recent book "Nitrogen Assessment: Pakistan as a case study" represents the first comprehensive assessment of nitrogen use in Pakistan, while his research has revealed that nitrogen use efficiency in Pakistan has declined from 67 to 30 percent over four decades. Beyond his academic work, which includes over 100 research articles and supervision of 5 PhD and 40 MSc students, he actively works with UNEP and other international organizations to promote sustainable nitrogen management practices. His excellence has been recognized through two best research paper awards and two research productivity awards from the Government of Pakistan.
