Distinguished Marine Biologist and Coral Reef Climate Change Expert
Dr. Sophie Dove serves as Director of the Coral Reef Ecosystem Laboratory at the University of Queensland, where she has established herself as a leading authority on environmental change impacts on marine organisms. After earning her MA in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, MA in Philosophy from the University of Southern California, and Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Sydney, she has built an impressive research career focusing on coral reef ecosystems. Her groundbreaking work includes investigating the interactive effects of seawater temperature and pCO2 on reef-building and reef-destroying organisms, leading to two international patents for her novel isolation of pigments from Scleractinian corals. As a highly active researcher and mentor, she has published over 34 high-impact journal articles in the past five years, supervised 20 post-graduate students, and contributed significantly to understanding coral-dinoflagellate symbiosis and reef responses to climate change. Her current research examines critical questions about reef productivity, carbon flow within coral symbiosis, and the balance between reef accretion and erosion under various climate change scenarios, while maintaining active collaboration with international research teams through the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies
