Dr. Shawn Trenell O'Neal is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he integrates his passions for music and social justice into his academic work. As a DJ, musician, and producer, Dr. O'Neal has developed a unique theoretical framework known as "Audio Intersectionality." This concept explores the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class through the lenses of sound, music, and performance studies. His research aims to analyze how sound and music can serve both as tools for subjugation and as strategies for resistance within African American and Queer African American communities, while also being applicable to other diasporic groups globally. In addition to his research, Dr. O'Neal teaches several courses on anti-racism through Coursera, including "Anti-Racism I," "Anti-Racism II," and "Anti-Racism III," which have gained significant traction among learners. He is also involved in community engagement initiatives and has received recognition for his contributions to teaching and scholarship in critical race studies. With a Ph.D. in Critical Ethnic Studies from CU Boulder, Dr. O'Neal continues to influence students and communities through his innovative approach to education and activism in the arts.
