Shawn O'Neal is a DJ, musician, and producer who brings a unique perspective to the field of race studies. Currently a race scholar in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, Shawn's work focuses on the concept of "Audio Intersectionality." This theory explores the intersection of race, gender, sexuality, and class with sound, music, and performance studies. His research examines how music and sound have been used either as tools of subjugation and normalization or as strategies of resistance and platforms for activism. While his work primarily focuses on African American and Queer African American communities in the United States, it extends to other diasporic communities, including African, Asian, Latinx, Chicanx, Middle Eastern, and Indigenous populations globally. Shawn teaches courses that explore anti-racism and the role of music and sound in social justice movements.
