A Pioneer in Socially Intelligent AI and Digital Inclusion

Delft University of TechnologySennay Ghebreab serves as a Full Professor of Socially-Intelligent AI at the University of Amsterdam, where he leads the Socially Intelligent Artificial Systems (SIAS) group at the Informatics Institute. His academic journey began at the University of Amsterdam, where he earned his MSc in Information Systems and PhD in computer vision and medical imaging. After postdoctoral work at Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, he returned to UvA in 2005, where he bridged research between computer vision and human vision. As founder and Scientific Director of the Civic AI Lab, a collaboration between the Ministry of Interior Affairs, City of Amsterdam, VU Amsterdam, and UvA, he leads initiatives to increase equal opportunity through AI in education, welfare, environment, mobility, and health. His work focuses on developing AI technology that promotes economic and social human rights while respecting fundamental human rights like privacy and non-discrimination. His contributions have earned him recognition as one of the 200 most influential people in the Netherlands and the Black Achievement Award for his contributions to science and education. He serves on multiple prestigious committees, including the State Commission against Discrimination and Racism and the Supervisory Board of the NEMO Science Museum
