Distinguished Scholar in Peace Studies and International Security
Sebastian Kaempf is an Associate Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at the School of Political Science and International Studies and Director of the Rotary Peace Centre at The University of Queensland. His expertise spans the intersection of International Relations and Peace Studies, with groundbreaking research focusing on two main areas: the relationship between ethics and laws of war in asymmetric conflicts, and the role of media technology in modern warfare. His acclaimed book "Saving Soldiers or Civilians? Casualty-Aversion versus Civilian Protection in Asymmetric Conflicts" has been recognized as a significant work on modern warfare. Kaempf's academic credentials include a PhD from Aberystwyth University and degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His excellence in teaching has been widely recognized, earning him the ISA Deborah Gerner Award for Teaching Innovation in 2020 and an Australian national award for teaching excellence in 2013. He has recently gained additional recognition as the co-producer of "Theaters of War: How the Pentagon and CIA took Hollywood," which won best film documentary at the British International Film Festival in 2023. His influence extends through his visiting fellowships at prestigious institutions worldwide and his role as a member of the editorial team for the Review of International Studies.
