École Polytechnique Fédérale de LausanneDr. Roland Kuhn has established himself as a leading figure in reactive systems and distributed computing. After earning his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in particle physics from TU München, he worked in the satellite industry before transitioning to software development. As the former technical lead of the Akka project at Lightbend, he made significant contributions to reactive programming frameworks. He co-authored the Reactive Manifesto and wrote Reactive Design Patterns, a comprehensive guide to creating reactive systems that received praise for its clear illustrations and high-quality content. Currently serving as CTO and co-founder of Actyx, a Munich-based startup, he focuses on developing platforms for local-first cooperation in factory environments. His expertise is shared through various educational initiatives, including teaching the Programming Reactive Systems course on Coursera, which covers topics from asynchronous programming to implementing scalable, resilient systems. His work combines theoretical depth with practical application, particularly in distributed systems and edge computing.
