Delft University of TechnologyPieter Vermaas serves as Associate Professor at TU Delft's Ethics and Philosophy of Technology Department, where he has worked since 1998 after completing his PhD in quantum mechanics at Utrecht University. His research spans multiple domains, from technical artifacts to quantum technology ethics. He led the Dual Nature of Technical Artifacts program (2000-2005), developing frameworks for understanding artifacts as both structural and intentional entities. His work advanced through an NWO VIDI fellowship (2006-2010) exploring functions in engineering design methods. As Editor-in-Chief of the Philosophy of Engineering and Technology book series and co-founder of the TU Delft Institute for Design for Values (2017), he shapes discourse on incorporating moral values into technology design. Currently, he leads ethics research for Quantum Delta NL and heads the Quantum Lab at TU Delft's Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, focusing on the societal impact of quantum technologies. His work emphasizes how design can achieve societal aims while adhering to ethical codes, particularly in emerging technologies.
