A Pioneer in Indoor Environmental Quality Research

Delft University of TechnologyPhilomena Bluyssen is a distinguished Full Professor of Indoor Environment at TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, where she has established herself as a leading authority in indoor environmental quality research. Her academic journey began with an MSc from TU Eindhoven in 1986, followed by a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark in 1990, focusing on air quality evaluation by trained panels. After two decades at TNO coordinating European projects on indoor environment quality optimization, she was appointed full professor at TU Delft in 2012. Her groundbreaking work includes establishing the SenseLab, a unique semi-lab environment supported by 25 companies, where she conducts cutting-edge research on airborne transmission of exhaled aerosols. With over 6,630 citations and 275 publications, her impact on the field is substantial. Her books have received prestigious recognition, including the Choice Outstanding Academic Titles Award in 2010 for "The Indoor Environment Handbook" and the IDEC Book Award in 2016 for "The Healthy Indoor Environment." As a fellow of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), co-founder of its Dutch chapter, and Visiting Professor at Feng Chia University in Taiwan since 2019, she continues to shape the understanding of indoor environmental quality and its impact on human wellbeing.
