Dr. Patrick Carter, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Health Behavior & Health Education at the University of Michigan. He serves as Co-Director of the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention and is the Director of the CDC-funded University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center. Dr. Carter’s research focuses on developing, testing, and implementing emergency department-based interventions aimed at reducing firearm violence and associated risk behaviors among high-risk urban youth populations. His innovative approach includes using m-health applications to gather intensive longitudinal data that helps characterize the epidemiological factors underlying risky firearm behaviors in adolescents.In addition to his role in research, Dr. Carter contributes significantly to the field through his leadership positions, including past Chair of the ACEP Trauma and Injury Prevention Section and Assistant Editor for the Annals of Emergency Medicine. He is actively involved in various initiatives aimed at preventing youth violence and improving community safety. Dr. Carter teaches the course "Science of Firearm Injury Prevention Among Children & Teens" on Coursera, where he shares his expertise with a broader audience, equipping learners with essential knowledge to address firearm safety and injury prevention effectively. His work continues to impact public health policy and community health initiatives aimed at reducing firearm-related injuries among children and teens.
