SDG AcademyDr. Michael Rogan is a distinguished economist serving as Associate Professor in Economics and Economic History at Rhodes University and an active member of the Neil Aggett Labour Studies Unit (NALSU). His academic journey includes a BA in International Studies from the University of Washington and both MA and PhD degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. As interim Director of WIEGO's Urban Policies Programme and research associate with Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing since 2011, he has significantly contributed to understanding informal economies and labor markets. His research portfolio spans crucial areas including gender dynamics in employment, poverty analysis, food security, and skills development, with particular emphasis on statistical analyses of earnings and employment status in informal economies. Through his work with the HSRC's Education and Skills Development Research Programme and leadership in the Labour Market Intelligence Partnership, he has shaped understanding of educational outcomes and labor market dynamics. His current research focuses on tax justice, urban regulation, and the measurement of informal employment, while his contributions to the 10-city Informal Economy Monitoring Study have provided valuable insights into global informal economic systems.
