Waseda UniversityDr Michael Annear serves as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, where he specializes in public health, gerontology, and the intersection of aging, physical activity, and urban environments. With a PhD from the University of Otago's Christchurch School of Medicine, he brings over 12 years of lecturing experience across New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. His impressive academic portfolio includes more than 50 peer-reviewed publications in prominent health and sport journals, over 30 international conference presentations, and successful acquisition of over $1 million in research funding from prestigious organizations including the Mirai Japan-Sweden collaborative funding initiative and JSPS Kakenhi grant program. Dr Annear holds significant roles in academic leadership as an associate editor for the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and maintains memberships in the European College of Sport Science and American College of Sports Medicine. His expertise extends beyond academia, having worked in New Zealand's local government on projects involving public green spaces, urban development, and sport recreation. Since moving to Japan in 2017, he has continued his active lifestyle while teaching research methods and statistics in an English graduate program and supervising both Masters and PhD students. His research employs quantitative, qualitative, and geospatial methodologies to explore connections between human aging, physical activity, and urban environments, making significant contributions to the field of healthy aging and environmental gerontology.
