University of PennsylvaniaMark Stern is the Kenneth L. M. Pray Professor of Social Policy and History at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught social welfare policy since 1980. After earning his BA from Reed College and PhD in history from York University in Toronto, he has established himself as a leading voice in social welfare policy and urban studies. As founder and principal investigator of the Social Impact of the Arts Project (SIAP), he has pioneered research on how arts and culture contribute to community wellbeing in Philadelphia and other U.S. cities. His scholarly contributions include seven books and monographs on social welfare and social history, with particular focus on America's response to social needs, urban policy, and the intersection of arts with community development. His current research examines the role of arts and culture in promoting community wellbeing, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to understanding social policy and urban life
