A Visionary Leader in Healthcare Technology and Informatics Education
Dr. Mark Braunstein, Professor of the Practice Emeritus at Georgia Tech's College of Computing, has established himself as a pioneering figure in health informatics over a remarkable five-decade career. After earning his BS from MIT and MD from the Medical University of South Carolina, he developed one of the first ambulatory electronic health record systems, setting the foundation for modern healthcare technology. His impact spans academia, entrepreneurship, and industry innovation, including founding Patient Care Technologies, Inc., an Inc 500 company, and serving as President and COO of NDCHealth. At Georgia Tech, he revolutionized health informatics education by developing the institution's first courses in the field and creating influential MOOCs in public health informatics. His literary contributions include three significant books, most notably "Health Informatics on FHIR," which provides the first comprehensive examination of HL7's transformative API standard. As a Visiting Scientist at the Australian E-Health Research Centre, he has extended his influence internationally, while his innovative teaching approaches, including developing a FHIR server with synthetic data sets for student use, have shaped the next generation of health informatics professionals. His achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including being named Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southeast Region and Distinguished Alumni by MUSC, while his ongoing work with HL7 and various research projects continues to advance the field of health informatics.
