Dr. Marco De Ruiter is a Professor of Clinical and Experimental Anatomy at Leiden University Medical Center. He completed his Medical Biology degree in 1987 and focused his research on the embryonic development of the cardiovascular system, culminating in a PhD in 1992. Following a brief postdoctoral position, he became an assistant professor of Anatomy and Embryology. In 2010, he was appointed to a full professorship at LUMC, where he oversees (post)graduate teaching activities, clinical anatomy research, skills laboratory organization, and body donation programs. His primary research interests include the development of abnormally formed aortic valves and aortic dilatation, as well as consulting on surgical anatomy of the pelvis to enhance nerve-sparing techniques in pelvic and abdominal surgeries. Additionally, Dr. De Ruiter serves as vice chair of the Technology Enhanced Learning Working Group at LUMC, where he develops innovative strategies for digital education. He teaches the course Anatomy of the Abdomen and Pelvis; a journey from basis to clinic, aimed at bridging foundational knowledge with clinical application.
