Delft University of TechnologyMarcel J.F. Stive, born in Amsterdam in 1951, is an emeritus professor of Coastal Engineering at TU Delft's Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. His academic journey began at TU Delft, where he earned his civil engineering degree in 1977 and doctorate in 1988 under Professor Jurjen Battjes. His career spans positions at WL-Delft Hydraulics (1977-1992), Polytechnic University of Catalonia (1992-1994), and TU Delft, where he served as Professor of Coastal Engineering from 2001 and Scientific Director of the Water Research Centre Delft from 2003 until his retirement in 2017. He is renowned for inventing the Sand Engine, an innovative 128-hectare artificial peninsula for coastal protection. His contributions earned him multiple honors, including knighthood in the Order of the Netherlands Lion (2013), the ASCE International Coastal Engineering Award (2015), and an honorary degree from Lund University. As a consultant to the IPCC and advisor to multiple governments, he continues to influence global coastal engineering and climate adaptation strategies
