Pioneer in Urban Water Cycle Technology and Sustainable Water Management
Luuk Rietveld serves as Professor of Drinking Water & Urban Water Cycle Technology at TU Delft, where he has established himself as a leading expert in water management and treatment systems since 1994. After earning his Civil Engineering degree from TU Delft in 1987, he spent four years as a lecturer in Sanitary Engineering at Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, followed by work at the Management Centre for International Co-operation. He completed his PhD at TU Delft in 2005, focusing on improving drinking water treatment operations through modeling. His research encompasses water quality and treatment technologies, wastewater reclamation, and sustainable water supply solutions, with particular emphasis on closing loops in urban water cycles and removing organic micro-pollutants. With over 240 research works and 6,300 citations, his contributions have significantly influenced water management practices globally. As an educator, he champions innovative teaching methods through activated and blended learning approaches, including the development of MOOCs and cross-cultural educational programs. His expertise extends to process modeling and optimization, technological innovations in water treatment, and the integration of sustainable water management principles, making him a vital contributor to advancing urban water technology while addressing global water challenges.
