École Polytechnique Fédérale de LausanneDr. Laurent Charlet serves as Distinguished Professor of Water Bio-Geochemistry and Nanotoxicology at the University of Grenoble-Alpes, where he has made significant contributions to understanding environmental and biological systems at the molecular level. After earning his MS and PhD in Soil and Environmental Sciences at UC Riverside under Dr. Garrison Sposito, he has built an impressive career combining field investigations with molecular-level research. His work focuses on protecting natural resources and developing strategies for environmental resilience, particularly in water quality and soil health. As co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hydrology and Head of the International Medical Geology Association French Chapter, he continues to shape the field of environmental geochemistry. His research spans multiple areas including nanoparticle reactivity and toxicity, metalloid speciation, and geological storage of water and waste. Awarded the CNRS Silver Medal for Excellence in Research in 2007, he has held visiting professorships at UC-Berkeley, EPFL-Lausanne, and Utrecht University. His current work examines cancer nanotherapeutics, water treatment technologies, and the Sponge City concept for urban water management. Through his leadership of various research initiatives and international collaborations, he advances our understanding of trace element behavior in environmental systems while developing new remediation techniques for water quality improvement.
