Kim, Sung-Joon is a distinguished professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), where he also serves as the Director of the Materials Development Center within the Graduate Institute of Ferrous and Eco Materials Technology (GIFT). He completed his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990, following a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from KAIST and Seoul National University, respectively. With extensive experience in both academia and industry, Kim has held significant roles, including Vice President of the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) and Senior Researcher at KIMS for over two decades. His research focuses on alloy design, particularly stainless steels, and the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of high-strength automotive steels. He has published numerous influential papers that contribute to advancements in materials science, particularly in understanding phase transformations and deformation mechanisms in steels, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in his field.
