Dr. Joseph A. Konstan is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Distinguished University Teaching Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He holds an A.B. from Harvard University and both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on various aspects of human-computer interaction, particularly recommender systems, social computing, and the application of computing in public health. Notably, his work on the GroupLens Recommender System earned him the 2010 ACM Software Systems Award. Dr. Konstan has received numerous teaching accolades and has contributed significantly to the field through his leadership roles, including past President of ACM SIGCHI.In addition to his research, Dr. Konstan teaches several courses on Coursera, including Evaluating User Interfaces, Introduction to Recommender Systems, and User Research and Design. He has also chaired significant conferences in the field, such as the first ACM Conference on Recommender Systems in 2007. Recognized as a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, and AAAS, he is actively involved in promoting ethical practices in social computing research and has delivered webinars on these topics.
