Hatala is an Associate Professor of Professional Practice at Louisiana State University's School of Leadership & Human Resource Development and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Ottawa, Canada. He earned his Ph.D. in Human Resource Development from the University of Toronto in 2003, following a Master's degree in Education from Elmira College and a Bachelor's degree from Laurentian University. His research interests include social networking behaviors, social capital, career development, and labor market transitions. As the founder of Flowork International, Dr. Hatala consults with organizations to enhance their social capital and resource accessibility. He is actively involved in professional organizations such as the Academy of Human Resource Development and has received several accolades, including the Elwood F. Holton, III Research Excellence Award in 2006. Dr. Hatala has also developed various innovative assessment tools and systems aimed at improving networking and job search strategies, and he authored "The Strategic Networker: A Learner’s Guide to Effective Networking."
