Distinguished Public Health Leader and Global Health Expert

Georgetown UniversityProfessor John Owusu Gyapong, currently serving as Secretary-General of the African Research Universities Alliance, is a renowned Ghanaian epidemiologist who previously served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. His distinguished career includes roles as Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research Innovation and Development at the University of Ghana and Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University. With medical training from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, followed by an MSc in Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, he has established himself as a leading authority in infectious disease epidemiology. His contributions include establishing and managing the Ghana Neglected Diseases Control Programme, publishing over 120 peer-reviewed articles, delivering more than 200 conference presentations, and co-editing a comprehensive book on Neglected Tropical Diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. His expertise is recognized through fellowships in prestigious organizations, including the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, and most recently, the UK Faculty of Public Health through Distinction. He continues to shape global health policy through his leadership roles in various WHO committees and international research boards, including chairing the Food and Drugs Authority Clinical Trials Technical Committee.
