KU LeuvenJoana Abrisketa Uriarte is an Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Human Rights Law at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. Her academic journey began with an LLB from the University of Deusto (1989-1994), followed by her doctoral research focusing on the right to humanitarian aid. She currently serves as Vice Dean in Research and International Relations at the Faculty of Law, while also maintaining an active role at the Pedro Arrupe Human Rights Institute, an academic institution established in 1997. Her expertise spans multiple areas including International Human Rights Law, International Refugee Law, and European Union Law. Abrisketa has made significant contributions to refugee and asylum policy research, notably through her recent work on the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainian refugees. She teaches International Law and European Union Law at Deusto Law School and participates in the Joint Master's Programme in International Humanitarian Action. Her scholarly work demonstrates a strong commitment to human rights advocacy and international humanitarian law, particularly evident in her leadership of research projects examining contemporary human rights challenges and asylum policies in the European Union.
