Cross is a multifaceted academic leader at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he serves dual roles as a Professor in the School of Environment and Society and founder-director of the Online Content Research and Development (OCRD) section. His research spans diverse areas including biofuels, environmental toxicology, renewable energy policy, and artificial intelligence in education. At his laboratory, which hosts approximately 20 students and staff, he leads cutting-edge research on waste-to-energy conversion, hydrogen separation, and machine learning applications. His academic impact is evidenced by over 150 published papers and patents, with his work receiving more than 4,000 citations. Prior to his academic career, Cross spent 14 years at Fujitsu Labs and Fujitsu Ltd. developing ferroelectric memory materials. As the head of OCRD (formerly OEDO), he has pioneered online education initiatives at Tokyo Tech, developing MOOCs for the edX platform and establishing a comprehensive support system for faculty in online content development. His lab provides a truly international research environment with students from 11 different countries, focusing on experiential learning and global engineering development. Cross, who speaks Japanese fluently, will continue his tenure at Tokyo Tech until his retirement in March 2029.
