Her academic credentials include a PhD from Gujarat University and a postdoctoral fellowship from Yale University's Economic Growth Center. As the Elected President of the 63rd Labour Economics Conference of the Indian Society of Labour Economics, she has made significant contributions to understanding labor markets and gender dynamics in informal economies. Her research primarily focuses on the informalisation of labor systems and its gender implications, particularly examining issues of social protection for informal workers, returns to education, and women entrepreneurship. She previously served as the Director of the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) and RBI Chair Professor of Economics. Her extensive work includes collaborations with national and international NGOs, serving on the Board of Governors of WIEGO, and contributing to policy development through various government committees. Her research has revealed crucial insights into urban and rural labor markets, showing that women constitute about 32% of the informal sector workforce and face particular vulnerabilities due to poor endowments in education, skill, and capital. As an active member of multiple editorial boards and academic institutions, she continues to shape discourse on labor economics and gender studies while teaching courses in Development Economics and Urban Informal Economy
