Delft University of TechnologyDr. Ivo Pothof serves as a part-time Associate Professor of Smart Thermal Grids at TU Delft and chairs the TU Delft Thermal Energy Platform (Thermo-X), while simultaneously managing the Renewable Energy portfolio at Deltares. His academic journey includes an MSc in Applied Mathematics from Universiteit Twente and a PhD in Civil Engineering from TU Delft. Since joining Deltares in 1997, he has established himself as a leading expert in industrial hydrodynamics, fluid transients, and pipeline systems optimization. His current work focuses on developing fourth-generation district heating grids and their integration into smart energy systems, with notable projects including the Digital Heat initiative in Amsterdam's Metropolitan Region, which aims to utilize data center heat for sustainable urban heating. As chair of the TU Delft Thermal Energy Systems Platform, he leads initiatives in renewable energy from water and underground sources, smart drainage systems, and the optimization of district heating and cooling systems. His expertise spans system innovations at the intersection of water, renewable energy, and smart infrastructure control, with his contributions to hydraulic design being recognized through his widely-used book chapter on water supply system transients.
