Professor Johan W. de Fijter is a distinguished professor of Medicine and Nephrology at Universiteit Leiden and serves as the Chair of the Leiden Region Internal Medicine Residency Program and Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). He completed his medical training at Leiden University, graduating in 2004, and focused his PhD thesis on "The Mucosal Immune Response in Primary IgA Nephropathy." With over 200 peer-reviewed publications, his research interests include clinical immunosuppression, chronic renal allograft dysfunction, and the discovery of novel biomarkers for transplant monitoring. Professor de Fijter has held leadership roles in various organizations, including serving as President of the Netherlands Transplantation Society and Chairman of the Eurotransplant Kidney Advisory Committee. He teaches the course Clinical Kidney, Pancreas and Islet Transplantation, where he shares his extensive knowledge and expertise in transplantation medicine.
