SDG AcademyGro Harlem Brundtland stands as a transformative figure in international politics, beginning her remarkable journey as a physician and public health expert before becoming Norway's first female Prime Minister at age 41. During her three terms as Prime Minister (1981, 1986-1989, and 1990-1996), she championed social reform and women's advancement, notably appointing eight women to her eighteen-member cabinet. Her global influence expanded significantly when she chaired the World Commission on Environment and Development, where she pioneered the concept of sustainable development through the landmark "Our Common Future" report in 1987. As Director-General of the World Health Organization (1998-2003), she successfully tackled global health challenges including AIDS and SARS while implementing crucial reforms. A founding member of The Elders, Brundtland continues to advocate for global health, sustainable development, and gender equality. Her distinguished career spans roles as UN Special Envoy for Climate Change, Vice-Chair of the UN Foundation Board, and membership in various international commissions addressing nuclear non-proliferation and security. Despite facing personal danger, including an attempted assassination at Utøya in 2011, she remains an influential voice in addressing global challenges through multilateral cooperation.
