His notable role as spokesman for Pope Francis and his work in Strategic Communications at the Vatican marks a significant chapter in his career. Before his Vatican service, Burke established himself as an accomplished foreign correspondent with over two decades of experience in both print and broadcast journalism, working for prestigious media organizations including Time Magazine and Fox News. His journalism career included extensive coverage of major international events, particularly throughout Europe and the Middle East, where he reported on significant conflicts including comprehensive coverage of the 2006 Lebanon war.
