Conservation Expert and Protected Areas Management Specialist

École Polytechnique Fédérale de LausanneGeoffroy Mauvais is a veterinarian who has dedicated his career to African wildlife conservation and protected areas management. Since 2006, he has coordinated the IUCN-Papaco (Program on African Protected Areas & Conservation), working from Ouagadougou for six years, Nairobi for three years, and currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His work focuses on improving biodiversity conservation through better governance and management of protected areas across Africa. In 2015, he joined EPFL to develop MOOC programs, where he led the creation of the first MOOC on protected areas management in Africa (MOOC-GAP) in collaboration with EPFL. His program emphasizes both species preservation and ecosystem maintenance, promoting sustainable resource use and equitable benefit sharing at local, national, and international levels. Through Papaco, he conducts site assessments, provides technical support to managers, and develops training programs for park staff and partners. He currently serves as an instructor for multiple MOOCs, including Protected Area Management and Ecological Monitoring, while continuing his work to enhance conservation practices across Africa.
