A Pioneer in AI Applications for Law Enforcement and Legal Reasoning

Delft University of TechnologyFloris Bex serves as the Scientific Director of the National Police Lab AI, a collaborative initiative between Dutch Police and several universities, while holding positions as Professor of Data Science and the Judiciary at Tilburg University and computer scientist at Utrecht University. His research focuses on how human reasoning can be captured in formal models and enhanced through AI technologies, with particular emphasis on argumentation theory in AI and AI & Law. At the Police Lab AI, he leads initiatives to develop state-of-the-art AI techniques that improve public safety in socially, legally, and ethically responsible ways. His work includes designing explainable AI systems for crime report assessment and developing intelligent interactive dialogues for law enforcement. The lab, under his direction, focuses on integrating symbolic and subsymbolic AI techniques, reasoning with legal arguments, and creating transparent AI solutions that maintain public trust. His contributions span multiple universities and research centers, including the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT), where he works on the intersection of AI, law, and society.
