A retired Commander in the Indian Navy, he has extensive experience in defense intelligence, specializing in Indo-Pacific security and defense diplomacy, and has received a commendation medal for his service. Dr. Upadhyaya has held senior managerial roles in aerospace and defense consulting firms like IHS Markit and Lloyds in Singapore, and has served as a research fellow at the National Maritime Foundation in New Delhi. His academic contributions include teaching at the Defence Services Staff College and Gujarat Maritime University, alongside publishing works such as "India’s Maritime Strategy: Balancing Regional Ambitions and China." His research interests encompass international relations, public international law, and regional security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific. Additionally, he contributes to various defense publications and media outlets as a correspondent and geopolitical analyst.
