University of British ColumbiaDr. Katherine Lyon serves as Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, where she combines expertise in sociology of education with innovative teaching approaches. Her research focuses on experiential pedagogies, inclusive assessment, and self-regulated learning for university students, particularly examining accessibility of community-engaged learning for international students and gender dynamics in engineering education. Her teaching excellence has earned numerous recognitions including the 2023 Outstanding Contribution to Teaching Award from the Canadian Sociological Association and the 2021 Killam Teaching Prize from UBC. She currently teaches courses including Social Interaction and Culture, Inequality and Social Change, and developed the free edX course "Inequality in Global Pandemics." Through her role at UBC, she leads research initiatives on linguistic diversity in assessments, student-led peer mentoring, and social vulnerability during global crises, while maintaining an active teaching portfolio that emphasizes experiential learning and inclusive education practices.
